Editor, ExploringOffgrid

Wade Ellison is the editorial byline for ExploringOffgrid — a pen name under which the site's guides are researched, written, and checked. It is a house name rather than a public personality, which is a long-standing convention in publishing and one we would rather be upfront about than pretend otherwise.

What the byline stands for

Every guide published under this name goes through the same process: the category is validated against real search demand before anything is written; products are verified as genuinely available at the retailer, with live listings checked rather than assumed; picks are chosen from manufacturer specifications and patterns across verified owner reviews, including the critical ones; and the whole piece is reviewed before publication.

What the byline does not stand for is hands-on testing. We do not claim to have personally installed every composting toilet or run every generator through a winter, because we have not, and inventing that experience would be worth less than nothing to you. Where a recommendation rests on specifications and owner consensus rather than first-hand use — which is most of them — that is exactly what the article says.

How to hold us to it

Our editorial policy sets out the standard in full, and our affiliate disclosure explains how the site earns money and why commissions do not influence rankings. If something here is wrong, we would genuinely rather hear it than not — corrections come before new articles.

Safety note

A lot of what we cover carries real risk: mains electricity, propane and diesel, wood heat and carbon monoxide, roof work, high-current DC wiring. Our guides flag the hazards we know about, but they are not a substitute for a licensed electrician, plumber, or installer where your local code requires one. When an article tells you to hire that out, it is not us being cautious for form's sake.
